Our First Trek: The Triund Experience

This was my first trek, and I had never visited the mountains before. We were a group of four—myself, Suresh Bhagat, along with my friends Rajat Kashyap, Manoj Arya, and Anuj Kumar, all of us working in IT companies. After some planning, we decided to go for the Triund Trek near Dharamkot, McLeod Ganj, in Himachal Pradesh.

Planning the Trip

Coordinating leave from our respective offices wasn’t easy, but eventually, we managed to get four days off. For transport, we discussed various options like flights, buses, and cabs, and finally chose the Volvo bus. The 10-11 hour journey from Delhi to Dharamshala sounded like an adventure in itself. During the peak season (March to June), ticket prices range from ₹1200-1500, but in other months, they drop to ₹800-1000. From Dharamshala, we hired a taxi to McLeod Ganj, where we had pre-booked our stay and trek with Thrillomania Adventure Company.

Arrival and First Day

We arrived tired and checked into Thrillomania Hostel, which cost ₹400 per night. The room had bunk beds, an attached washroom, and a heater (though we didn’t need it as Delhi was at 40°C). Our host, Khali Ji, greeted us warmly and introduced us to the local chef, Gian Ji. For breakfast, we enjoyed parathas, poha, and lemon tea. Exhausted from the journey, we napped until 4 p.m.

In the evening, we explored Bhagsu Market, just a short walk from the hostel. From the hostel, we could see Bhagsu Car Parking and Bhagsu Waterfall. After shopping for essentials, we returned for a delicious dinner of rice, chapati, and mixed vegetables prepared by Gian Ji. We then strolled along Dharamkot Road before playing indoor games and heading to bed, excited for the trek ahead.

The Trek Begins

The next morning, after a light breakfast, we joined our trekking group. Our guide briefed us about the trek and necessary precautions. He advised us to carry essentials like water bottles, sunscreen, comfortable clothes, woolen jackets, a strong backpack, a torch, extra socks, ID proof, and any required medicines.

We started the trek at 10:15 a.m. from Gallu Devi Temple after completing the necessary formalities. The trek to the Dhauladhar Mountains took about three hours, and the aerial views of Dharamshala along the way were mesmerizing. We stopped at a small café to rest and click pictures. After two more hours of trekking, we finally reached Triund Top.

The views were breathtaking, with the snow-capped Dhauladhar Range in the background. We spent time taking photos and soaking in the beauty before enjoying dinner and a bonfire at the campsite. Our guide, Shashi, asked us to wake up early for the sunrise.

Sunrise and Return Journey

The next morning, we woke up to watch a spectacular sunrise. After breakfast at 9 a.m., we began our descent. The return trek took around four hours, and we stopped at Bhagsu Waterfall to relax and enjoy the serene environment.

Back at the hostel, we rested for a while before trying to visit as many nearby attractions as possible, including the Dalai Lama TempleMcLeod Ganj Main SquareKalachakra Temple, and St. John’s Church. By evening, we left for Dharamshala to catch our Volvo bus back to Delhi.

We arrived in Delhi at 7 a.m., tired but filled with unforgettable memories of our first trek and the incredible Triund experience.
